Slug & Lettuce
22/04/08
With a crowded High Street in mind, the senior management at Slug & Lettuce asked Imagesound to
develop a profile of music that would clearly differentiate themselves from the competition. Slug
have made a definite move away from the culture and customer associated with circuit drinking. With
an expanded menu and a premium range of beers and wines they are squarely targeting the older and more
affluent customer.
The older customer demographic gave Imagesound's music consultants the opportunity to program from
a broader musical era and wider range of styles and tempos. Creating the audio backdrop to a longer
customer stay means the music no longer has to deliver a quick fix through the heavy rotation of
high profile, new releases. Instead we concentrate on producing a more grown-up and sophisticated
soundtrack that was noticeably Slug, calling on multiple musical styles and references whilst
maintaining a contemporary feel.
Rather than supply yet another chillout daypart, the Slug morning playlist features acoustic,
ambient and soul tracks, the majority of which are vocal tracks rather than background instrumentals.
After lunch the music becomes more upbeat with soul, acid jazz and funk tracks to the fore. Mixing
the best of classic 60's and 70's funk and soul with their more modern counterparts you will have
Aretha playing next to DJ Cam a Jacksons remix sitting next to a Marvin Gaye original or Jazzhole
sitting next to Cymande or Amp Fiddler.
At night the tempo is lifted again mixing classic Hip-Hop and dance floor soul with the best of
today's funky lounge and dance music. Not being slaves to the charts allows us to choose tracks
that both add something new to the list now but also offer a timeless appeal to ensure that they
can be part of the Slug sound into the future.
Sundays are seen as a time of rest and recuperation from the night before – hopefully spent
enjoying oneself maybe a little too much in the Slug the night before! – and so a more relaxing
note is set. However, again rather than opt for a chillout list we have assembled a jazz brunch
list exploring the more groovy side of traditional and electronic jazz and remixes of the same.
A BLT, game of backgammon and Donald Byrd on the hi-fi – what more do you need?
With the new Slug & Lettuce collection we aimed to deliver a collection of music unique on
the leisure high street, mixing the best of classic and fresh tracks with sufficient depth
to provide new treats for the repeat visitor each and every time they return.
